Is robotic dental surgery the future?

How would your patients react to a robot rather than a human dental professional undertaking their annual check-up or dental surgery? The option to use sophisticated robots for dental surgery could be available sooner than we think.

The option of robotic dental surgery could soon be a reality according to the South China Morning Post, which has reported that a robot in China implanted two 3D-printed teeth into a woman’s mouth on its own. Researchers hope it can help the country’s dentist shortage problem.

Before the surgery took place, the robot was oriented around the patient’s head and mouth and then programmed to complete the procedure. This included the angles and depth required for accurate placement of the implants.

After testing, the operation was carried out in about 60 minutes and, though medical staff were present, none of them assisted the robot while it worked. Afterwards, the staff determined that the robot had implanted the teeth with high precision.
